Philippines Reaps Scores of Awards in 2009 ICAS-Science

The Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) of the University of New South Wales disclosed that a total of 271 Filipino kids from the 500 Philippine participants who joined in the 2009 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Science made a fruitful harvest of High Distinction, Distinction and Credit Awards. Participated by more than 1.7 million elementary grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils from ten countries including the Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and some territories in the pacific, the Philippines showed an improved results in ICASS administered simultaneously worldwide on June 13, 2009.

The ICAS – Science assesses skills in the areas of: interpreting data, applying data and higher order skills including investigating, reasoning and problem solving. These skills are embedded in the syllabus documents of all the key learning areas and are meant to be taught in context. The skills are tested in contexts drawn from four Science knowledge areas: Earth and Beyond (incorporating the Earth Sciences and Astronomy), Natural and Processed Materials (incorporating Chemistry), Life and Living (incorporating Biology and Ecology) and Energy and Change (incorporating Physics).

The improved science curriculum in our country enables the Filipino participants to rise at par with the foreign counterparts. As such, 33 garnered High Distinction Awards, 89 gained Distinction Awards and 149 got the Credit Awards. The inspiring results this year made the Philippine Board of Studies Foundation, Inc. and MTG, Philippines families to congratulate and to cheer these little scientific-minded grade schoolers.

ICAS-English is Set on August 1, 2009

The University of New South Wales Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) through the MTG, Philippines will be conducting the 2009 International Competitions and Assessment for Schools-English on August 1, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. in various venues across the country.

This contest aims to gauge or assess their reading and language skills. In ICAS-English, reading and language skills are assessed in a ranged of texts. The participants are required to locate, identify, interpret, infer and synthesize information in and about texts, focusing on the aspects of reading for meaning in literary texts, reading for meaning in factual texts, textual devices, syntax and vocabulary.

This international competition in English was introduced in Australia in 1981 and due to its national success, the contest was expanded worldwide in 1994 and it now attracts hundreds of thousands participants annually in countries like Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, China, South Africa, Indonesia and the Middle East.  In the Philippines, ICAS-English, in its second year, will be participated in by no less than 1000 Filipino kids.

The competition will be at a maximum of 60 minutes focusing on the aspects of reading for meaning in literary texts, reading for meaning in factual texts, textual devices, syntax and vocabulary.

The ICAS-English participants must bring a pencil- 2B or B (not Pen) and an eraser during the competition. Bringing of dictionaries, thesaurus, mobile phones, pagers and other personal electronic devices are strictly prohibited in the contest. The participants are expected to be in their complete school uniform.

Any participants who are interested of the previous competition materials, they may log on at www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/prepare/practice_questions. Paper A is intended for grade 3; Paper B for grade 4; Paper C for grade 5; Paper D for grade 6; Paper E for grade 7/1st year; Paper F for 2nd year high school; Paper G for 3rd year HS and Paper H for 4th year high school level.

Please be informed that Grace Christian College has installed a thermal scanner at the main gate. This is the school’s precautionary measure to protect its students, teachers and staff from the spread of AH1N1. Therefore, all participants of the ICAS – English Competition are advised to pass through the thermal scanner for temperature check on Saturday, August 1, 2009. Any participant whose temperature is above 37 degree Celsius will not be allowed to enter Grace Christian School.
